So, this is my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt: I think WOTR is a massive improvement over Kingmaker in essentially every way. The more traditional story structure has allowed tighter writing, and avoids Kingmaker's mid-late game issue of kinda fading out. The "kingdom management" equivalent feels better integrated into the game.

A bit of both. There's full blown dedicated dungeons. Not trying to spoil anything but there's demon lords who specialise in evil abodes. There's also some battlefield open areas with a big demon ambush or tough demons hanging about a bit like in kingmaker which had areas with random tough mobs standing about.
